Gario Graham
Gario Graham, track star at the University of Hartford has been interviewed at a press conference on March 7, 2013. From Graham’s reaction it was clear to see that he had been quite shocked and taken by surprise at all the good questions that he had been asked. When asked “why the University of Hartford?” and “why track?” he had seemed quite astonished. He finds that it is a bit difficult to balance out both these passions of his; but he finds a way to do it while at the same time maintaining a job. Graham is determined and passionate in all that he does and doesn’t try to find ways out of them. It is clear to see that Graham is devoted and will continue to live out his life with the things he is now doing. However, he does plan to attend law school and this could possibly change all that he does in the future when it comes down to track.
Graham’s inspirational figure is his mentor from high school. His mentor had always tried to persuade him into doing track, and he had really not payed any mind to it. But, as time had gone by, Graham had decided to give him the chance that he deserved. In the end he had loved it. Though it had been during his senior year in high school that he had started the sport, he had continued it in college and is now a senior in college that enjoys every waking moment of it. As he said “I love to compete.” This is quite interesting because it’s nice to see that such a sport can be so empowering and lighting in one’s life. Other inspirational figures to Graham are his mother along with his track coach, Derek Jeter, and Mike Maseena. Graham had also said “My mom, no matter what.” It’s clear to see that Grahams mother is a huge impact in his life along with the things that he does, being from Queens, New York and having to leave his family behind to go to college I can just imagine how hard and difficult it is for him to handle. On that note, it is with great pleasure to say that Graham is a well inspired and well rounded student athlete that is achieving all that he wants.
Track comes with many uprisings as well as downfalls. An uprising to Graham I would say is the ability for him to do what he enjoys, or even that he has a second family with his track team. However, for the downfalls it may be the early morning practices or possibly even the diets that he must go by. But, at the end of the day I’m sure that Graham loves every waking moment of track and will do anything to stick with it, though he does not want to run leisurely. In all track has changed the person that Graham is today, as he stated “yes, definitely.” Track made him realize that he can stay dedicated to things. He also found it fun to know there was someone there to show his support and love with of the sport.
