Attitude of a Coach Affects Athletic Performance
The attitude of a coach and how he/she speaks or acts towards his/her players, in any sport, can ultimately effect the way that athletes perform. There are various aspects and opinions as to how athletes feel about their coaches and how it can affect their performance. Some may not realize it, but firstly, coaches should be giving athletes the mentality of going into a game and to think positively about it. When coaches coach, as they should, it sets the attitude of players while on the field and/or court. Coaches need to give all their athletes support and encouragement for this is one key thing that they must have as an asset. Respecting the players gives them a sense of enthusiasm in a way or in other words makes them want to play just as much as they’d like. Coaches provide the athletes with key notes in the things they do, so they feel they can do all that it is they can. Coaches are the guide to every athlete and they must be there for them as much as they can. Without positive attitude and charm from the coaches, athletes will no longer have the respect for their coach as they should.
Coaches should be giving athletes the mentality of going into a game and thinking positively about it. With them doing that, it, prepares players physically, mentally, and fundamentally. When coaches prepare their players for any outcome at anytime, it shows them that the coaches do want to prepare them for all that is thrown at them and ultimately they are there for them. However, if they get the opposite they will not be aware nor will they know what to do in some cases. Also, when coaches give a positive attitude it helps for them to play at their optimal level and to do the best that they can in any situation. With that being done athletes have the opportunity to be the best that they can as well as think they are doing the best that they can because there coach is the reason for their mentality in the game as a whole. Coaches must teach athletes the fundamentals so they are prepared, both going into games and at practice. For they must be dedicated at all times possible. If coaches give them the mentality to go into a game positively, players will reflect off of that and do what it is that they can to be the best they can. There are nine mental skills of which coaches need to help their athletes realize as well as understand. Those nine are choosing and maintaining a positive attitude, maintaining a high level of self motivation, setting high but realistic goals, dealing effectively with people, using positive self talk, using positive mental imagery, managing anxiety effectively, managing emotions effectively and maintaining concentration. (Lesyk, 1998) If players receive this from not only themselves but there coaches then they will have the attitude it is they should to play a hardworking and successful game with no attitude they may have sustained had it come from the coach.
Coaches provide athletes with the attitude of which they give off while they are on the field and/ or court. When players feel as though their coaches are being respectful then the athletes enter the field and/or court with a positive attitude and show the audience that they are respectful. However, if the second a coach is rude or disrespectful to any player, that player soon does not do all that he/she can, nor does he/she play with a positive attitude. It would only be a matter of time before that begins to affect other players and just how seriously they take the game and perform. Attitudes that coaches give athletes before any event whether it be practice or a game, has a huge effect on players. The way that it does is because in an article Sandra Pelaez had stated “coaches have a unique relationship with their athletes.” (Good Sports: Coaches Help Athletes Be More Ethical, Study Suggests, 1995-2012) This clearly tells readers that coaches are an ultimate effect on players and how it is they perform. Also, coaches provide moral guidance for the athletes of whom they train, and if that doesn’t say it all. All players look up to their coaches and for their guidance, when they feel as though it is not there, then they soon lose the ability to perform the way that they can. On that note, when coaches do not show a sense of handle or stability of their attitude, in other words showing control, then the players begin to feed on it. (Candrea, 2009) When the athletes begin to feed on that, then they begin to express that emotion on one another and this leads for things to go haywire and fall out of hand. And soon enough things will not be in control and start to fall apart. Coaches must begin to realize and understand that there actions should be watched and monitored by themselves so they can see just what it is they are doing in effect to the athletes and the performances that they put on.
Furthermore, coaches need to give all their athletes support and encouragement for this is one key thing that they must have as an asset. With this as an asset players have the ability to perform at their best ability. “Schools felt their coach’s behavior/ traits did moderately to strongly influence their performance and team satisfaction,” said by David Brent Holstein of Olivet Nazarene University. (Holstein, 2010) Coaches must respect players because they themselves learn by example. If they feel as though the coach is being prudent and unfair this will throw their game off it will also cause tension which is the complete opposite of what a coach and an athlete’s relationship should be like. "Coaches are mentors, parent figures, career enablers, and judges- all at the same time," states Pelaez, and with this being said coaches must really think about the relationship that they have with their players. (Good Sports: Coaches Help Athletes Be More Ethical, Study Suggests, 1995-2012) The players look up to them and expect nothing but the best and respect. When athletes are given an attitude, a key that coaches must understand is they play by the attitude or interpretation of an attitude that they are given. They do not hold that anger or distraught feeling in, as a matter of a fact they let it all out in what it I they are doing. And which case that would be the sport they attend in. “A champion mindset is I want to play,” when coaches instill this into the athletes, these athletes soon feel the motivation and encouragement to believe what it is they should. (JC, 2013) That is, they are the best they can be and do the best that they can. Motivational speeches help players in one way or another to see that they are there for them. So for a coach to do that then players will feel that motivation to go onto the field and/or court and do the best that they can with no worry. They just need to support and encouragement from the man/women that leads them to do what they think is the best that they can do. Coaches must stand up and take their place as being the ones to lead and cause for athletes to go onto a field and/ or court to do the best they can and not to have an attitude while it is that they do it.
When a coach respects an athlete it gives them the sense of encouragement which helps to influence them to do well. All athletes whether they be high school, college or professional ones they all expect for their coach to be the politest to them. And some when they do not receive it they do not return the favor. One thing that all must realize is being influential is a powerful teaching tool. (House, 2010)And it is what strikes to players that they are well thought of and considered. Coaches are meant to lead and influence all athletes whether they have a problem with them or not, coaches are the key in making the team one and keeping it that way. For any reason should an athlete lose control, they need to expect a coach to be there for them because it is them that helps them to achieve their desirable outcome. (House, 2010) “Coaches have a direct influence on players, their attitudes and athletic performance”, (North, 2013) for they are the ones that truly unite athletes and teach them all fundamental activities it is that they need in that particular sport. When players are encouraged by the coach, they move the fans and parents as well. Coaches have a toll on the parents on the sideline and if some feel as though the coach is not doing what it is that he should, then parents soon to have a negative attitude as an athlete would. This is not quite common but is becoming to be apparent in some cases. Parents have the passion for what it is that their child does and so do fans. But, once coaches get out of line they have an effect that causes for the persons on the sidelines to act vulgarly and disrespectfully. Coaches do need to watch how it is they perform both on the field and/ or court and in privacy. For they can always be a reason for anyone acts. Coaches must adapt a respectful and positive attitude to have a positive outcome by the athletes. Athlete’s athletic performances consist and are maintained in all ways by the coaches themselves. Athletes look at them as if they are in higher power, meaning they are idols. They could be considered their idols because any athlete looks up to their coach and just how far they have made it. They think about the hard work they had done, as well as what they had done to get there. They do not look down upon them, but they do hope for them to have their best interest at heart for them, as well as hope that the coaches are hoping for the best for them. And for them to believe that they can do their athletic sport the best they can.
The needs of athletes are the attitude of teamwork. If they have the attitude of teamwork and supported by their coach that’s all they need. (Hiter, 2008) Ultimately a team is a unit because of the coach and just how much he takes pride and joy into it. And for that he should not give negative attitude all the time. Once this is done, athletes begin to lose respect and they begin to show that in their athletic performance. Compassion in all that they do is what coaches mainly ask for and this is positive. They should do that and encourage players best that they can. Nurturing coaches, whether they are too nice, too mean, or in between athletes need this and also depend on it. Nurture is an instinct that they receive, and once they do they feel as though the coach is doing all that he can. And when they feel that he is they perform to the best ability that they can. To prepare athletes which is what a team or individual needs, coaches prepare them mentally, physically, and fundamentally. To do all this they must give both positive and negative feedback to the athletes. (Hiter, 2008)Though many may not think this will help or boost self confidence it actually helps the players to fix whatever it is they think that they should. "Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do." As said by former coach/player John Wooden. (Chung, 2002-2010) This is a motto that all athletes must go by and all coaches should pass onto their players so that they see and understand that they can do whatever it is possible. Coaches are the mentors and leaders in all that they do to teach athletes as well as to lead them to better places as well as things.
Coaches must be the spine in a team and the athletes in which they train. For they prepare them mentally, for any event, whether it be practice or a game. Coach’s attitudes are one that greatly affects the attitude of an athlete before they perform in any occasion. As many may not know or understand, coaches are the heart and soul of a team and they re what makes the team a team. Without a coach there wouldn’t really be teams there would be groups of persons joining in a field for a game or season together. A coach is the leader of them all and makes the team who they are. Other aspects of which a coach put onto athletes is being their support and encouragement through all that they face. As well as respecting the players enough to influence them in the direction that they should be going. Attitudes of a coach need to be positive to give a team or individual athlete what it is they need. They must not leave them to do it all on their own, for they cannot, they need a leader and someone who can direct them in the area of which they need to be in. coaches are a huge factor in how an athlete performs, and they need to see they must always be positive and aware to guide those athletes to where they should be.
